About the Academic Working Group

The Academic Working Group convenes an international body of scholars to focus on international cooperation with respect to research and scholarship in the fields of Holocaust studies.

As the Stockholm Declaration states, We share a commitment to throw light on the still obscured shadows of the Holocaust. We will take all necessary steps to facilitate the opening of archives in order to ensure that all documents bearing on the Holocaust are available to researchers.”

Key achievements of the AWG include:

  • Overseeing the second book in IHRA's publication series, "Bystanders, Rescuers or Perpetrators? The Neutral Countries and the Shoah'. The volume offers a trans-national, comparative perspective on the varied reactions of the neutral countries to the Nazi persecution and murder of the European Jews.
  • Supporting efforts to fully open the International Tracing Service (ITS) archives for scholarly (and other) research.
  • A list of Recommended Readings on the history of the Holocaust

The current Chair of the AWG is Karel Berkhof from the Netherlands.
