Vilnius, 22 March 2017 - Speakers at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance conference “As Mass Murder Began: Identifying and Remembering the Killing Sites of Summer-Fall 1941” stressed the importance of reflecting the full scope of experiences of those murdered during the Holocaust as well as the need for thoughtful and accurate marking, identification and commemoration of killing sites.

On 29 June, 2017,  the 31 Members Countries of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) adopted, in consensus, a statement in which the organization stated its opposition to the historically unsupportable use of the terms “Polish Death Camps” or “Polish Camps” to refer to the camps and sites of persecution and murder established by Nazi Germany on invaded and occupied Polish soil.

From 25 – 27 May, 2017, an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Expert Meeting entitled “50 Years of Roma Genocide Research” was organized by the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance in Vienna /Austria and its director, Dr. Gerhard Baumgartner.

From 23-25 April the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), Ambassador Benno Bättig, and the IHRA Executive Secretary, Dr Kathrin Meyer, attended the International March of the Living in Poland at the invitation of Austrian Minister of Education, Sonja Hammerschmid.

From 8-10 March Ambassador Jan Deboutte took part in high-level political meetings and commemorative events in Skopje. Ambassador Deboutte, who was IHRA Chair in 2012, was accompanied by Solvej Berlau (Danish Delegation to IHRA) and Andrea Szonyi (Hungarian Delegation to IHRA), members of the IHRA Steering Committee on Holocaust Memorial Days.

From 9-12 March, Ambassador Sandro De Bernardin took part in high-level political meetings and commemorative events in Sofia. Ambassador De Bernardin, who will be IHRA Chair in 2018, was accompanied by Richelle Budd-Caplan (Israeli Delegation) and Olivia Marks-Woldman (UK Delegation) who are both members of the IHRA Steering Committee on Holocaust Memorial Days.
