Stolperstein laid in Nitra, Slovakia

On 25 September the first Stolperstein - a stone to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust - will be laid in the Slovak town of Nitra. This event is organized by the European Forum of Wine Culture, the Slovak Holocaust Museum in Sered, and the NGO Antikomplex under the auspices of the Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs.

On 9 September, 2017, Slovakia commemorates the "Memorial Day for Victims of the Holocaust and of Racial Violence". Established in 2000, the day marks the date in 1941 when the Slovak government issued a decree on the legal status of Jews, the so-called the Jewish Codex. The Codex led to deportations which resulted in the murder of over 70,000 Slovak Jews.

The Slovak post office is commemorating the memory of holocaust victims with a stamp to mark 75 years since the first deportation of Jews from Slovakia. An exhibition at the Postal Museum in Banská Bystrica is also being organized.

From 24-26 March 2017 the Slovak National Museum - Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava will hold a memorial event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the departure of the first transport to leave Slovakia for the German Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp.

Slovakia's membership of the IHRA is an expression of its will to be among states that actively support education on the Holocaust, its remembrance and research. It wasn't until 1989 that scientific investigation in this field was renewed without ideological bias and the void in Slovak history began to be filled.
