Pope to visit Auschwitz

18.01.2016

Sources suggest that Pope Francis is set to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and State Museum this summer during his visit to Poland.

It is thought that plans have been made for Pope Francis to pay his respects to the victims of the Holocaust at the site. It has already been announced that the Pope will travel to Krakow in July for World Youth Day, although a full programme has yet to be released.

Papal knight Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs at the American Jewish committee, said: "This will be an important moment when Pope Francis follows in the footsteps of his predecessors, paying homage to the victims of the Shoah and reaffirming the Catholic Church’s unequivocal condemnation of antisemitism. Pope Francis has personally stated that it is impossible to be an antisemite and be a true Christian."

On 18 January Pope Francis visited Rome's Great Synagogue, where he condemned violence carried out in the name of religion.
