Hungary Pledges Donation to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation

15.08.2013

Hungary is to provide funding to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation as part of the Holocaust Memorial Year in Hungary in 2014, and will also take part in the Foundation's International Committee.

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in agreement with the resolution adopted by the Government, has prepared a proposal for providing support to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. Hungary will contribute 120,000 euros to the maintenance of the Memorial Site and Museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The goal of the Foundation is to preserve the facilities and collections of the former death camp as a memorial for the future, and to ensure the financial resources for the cost of maintenance. Over one-third of the prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp were deported from Hungary in 1944.

The Government of Hungary, on the eve of the seventieth anniversary of the deportation of Hungarian Jews, intends to commemorate the irreplaceable loss of human lives and stresses its commitment to preserving the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and the rejection of all forms of extremism. The Hungarian Embassy in Warsaw has informed President of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation Piotr Cywiński about the decision and Mr. Cywiński has already responded through a letter expressing his thanks. Hungary is now represented in the International Committee of the Foundation by Hungarian Ambassador to Poland Iván Gyurcsik.
