30.04.2014

Based on a 2000 Parliamentary decision, Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated on April 16 in Hungary since 2001.

Several commemoration events were held on Sunday, 27 April in Budapest.  Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Justice, spoke at a ceremony held at the House of Terror Museum.

“The Holocaust, an unheard example of industrially executed terror, was the tragedy of mankind, Hungarians and Jews as well,” he stated.

Navracsics’s speech can be read here.

On Sunday tens of thousands of people also participated in the March of the Living in Budapest, at which dozens of Holocaust survivors were the guests of honor.

Hungarian President János Áder attended the March of the Living memorial event at Auschwitz-Birkenau on Monday, 28 April and delivered a speech.  His full remarks are available here.
