Education for Change


From 29-30 September 2016, an international symposium on combining history learning and Human Rights education will take place at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.

The symposium offers opportunities for exchange with international experts on best practices and concepts and for particpants to present their own work.

Educators in secondary school, university based teacher trainers, staff from museum and memorial sites as well as those from non-formal educational environments have the opportunity to take part in sector specific workshops. Education policy on combined educational approaches will be discussed by a panel.

The book launches will present the two most recent publications on combining history learning and human rights education:

  • Martin Lücke, Felisa Tibbitts, Else Engel, Lea Fenner (Eds.) (2016): Change – Handbook for History Learning and Human Rights Education in Formal, Non-formal and Higher Education.
  • Claudia Lenz, Sanna Brattland, Lise Kvande (Eds.) (2016): Crossing Borders. Combining Human Rights Education and History Education.

The book launches and the symposium are a joint project by the Freie Universität Berlin, History Didactics Department, Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) right now Human Rights Consultancy & Training, The European Wergeland Centre (EWC), The Falstad Centre.

The symposium is funded by the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ) as part of its Teaching Human Rights programme.
