Yahad – In Unum (meaning “together” in Hebrew and Latin) was created in 2004 by Father Patrick Desbois. Starting in Ukraine, its main goal has been to collect testimonies of eyewitnesses and to identify and document sites of the mass murder of Jews, Roma, and others in Nazi controlled Eastern Europe. Yahad’s fieldwork contributed significantly to a better understanding of the “Holocaust by bullets”, shedding particular light on its public nature and the many roles local civilians played in the killings. As of May 2015, 4,186 testimonies were recorded and 1,617 sites of mass executions documented. Yahad’s exhibitions were shown in many cities across Europe and North America. An interactive map of the sites investigated is available online and Yahad’s archives can be consulted in Paris and at the USHMM.
