Reaffirmation in Action

OSCE/ODIHR

Canada

On 27 Janaury Belle Jamiewski, the Chair of the Freeman Family Foundation Holocaust Education Centre, will read the reaffirmation of the Stockholm Declaration aloud at the official opening of the Face of the Ghetto exhibit. A political presence will attend the opening and television coverage of the exhibit took place on 26 January as reporters interviewed several people onsite for the evening news. The reaffirmation statement was also posted on their website.

 

Czech Republic

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs have issued a press release highlighting the reaffirmation of the Stockholm Declaration.

France

The Fondation Shoah tweeted about the reaffirmation and posted the press release on their website.

Finland

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release: "As part of commemorating the Day of Remembrance, Finland affirms its commitment to IHRA’s so-called Stockholm Declaration, the aim of which is to promote the joint efforts of Governments to combat anti-Semitism, xenophobia and genocide. IHRA’s 31 member countries and eight observer countries commit themselves to the development of education, research, museum activities and other ways in order to keep the memory of the holocaust alive. In addition, Finland has kept the past and present persecution experienced by the Roma in the fore internationally."

Hungary

  • The Tom Lantos Institute tweeted about the reaffirmation.
  • On 19 January 2015 at the Swedish Embassy in Budapest as part of the memorial program "Raoul Wallenberg-Making a Difference; an evening of remembrance and tolerance"  Mr. Takács reaffirmed Hungary’s strong and unqualified support for the founding document of IHRA, the Stockholm Declaration of the year 2000 and underlined that Hungary remains fully committed to the principles and objectives of the Stockholm Declaration. 

Ireland

Human Rights Ireland and the Irish Embassy in Sweden tweeted about the reaffirmation.

Israel

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel published the reaffirmation on their Ministry webpage as well as sharing it on Twitter. Their tweet has already been retweeted 25 times and has reached as far afield as the Israeli Embassy in India. It is hoped that Israeli Embassies around the world will incorporate the statement in to their 27 January commemorations.

The Netherlands

The National Institute of War Documentation tweeted our press release.

Poland

The reaffirmation was published on the webpage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw on the evening of Monday 26 January.

Romania

1. Press Release:

  • On the occasion of the 27 January Holocaust victims commemoration, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Romania's firm support for the Stockholm Declaration. The Ministry issued the following press release. This press release will also be posted on the Ministry’s social media accounts twitter, facebook and on the webpages and social media accounts of Romania’s embassies abroad.
  • The National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania has isssued a press release containing the reaffirmation text.
  • The Chamber of Deputies issued a press release on 27 January. An English translation can be found here.

2. Events

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also held its own commemorative event on 27 Janaury at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of the future Romanian IHRA Chair, Ambasssador Constantinescu, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, and the Romanian Head of Delegation. The Ministry released the following press release.

3. Particpation in International Events

  • On 22 January, on the occasion of the event hosted by the The Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm, including a lecture by Radu Ioanid on the Pogrom in Iasi, the Stockholm Declaration was reaffirmed in the speech of the Embassy and the Cultural Institute’s representatives.
  • On 22 January, on the occasion of the UN General Assembly Special Meeting on Antisemitism in New York, the Romanian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Simona-Mirela Miculescu, held a national statement in which the reaffirmation was referenced.
  • On 26-27 January, the Romanian President of the Chamber of Deputies participated in the “Let My People Live” International Forum in Prague and Terezin; the speech he delivered referenced  the reaffirmation of the Stockholm Declaration.

Slovakia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted the press release.

United Kingdom

The Association of Jewish Refugees posted the press release on their homepage.

IHRA Chair, Sir Andrew Burns, incoporated the statement into his address to the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on 22 January.

Uruguay

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a press release marking the 15th anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration.

OSCE/ODIHR

OSCE/ODIHR posted an article mentioning the reaffirmation: "ODIHR co-operates with the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) to raise awareness about the Holocaust and facilitate the exchange of good practices between experts from different countries. This co-operation is inspired by OSCE commitments and the Stockholm Declaration on the Holocaust, reaffirmed by IHRA on 27 January 2015."
