Yom HaShoah Commemorated in Canada

29.04.2014

Approximately 1400 people attended the Toronto community commemoration for Yom HaShoah on Sunday 27 April, 2014.

Presented in partnership by the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre and the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem, the event included the participation of several community organizations.

The theme for the program,Jews on the Edge - 1944: Between Annihilation and Liberation” was expressed through readings and reflections delivered by students, as well as a keynote address from Holocaust survivor speaker Leslie Meisels and performance from violist Uri Mayer.

In 2003, Canada officially recognized Holocaust Memorial Day according to the Jewish calendar on a national level. The ten Canadian provinces also passed legislation making Holocaust Remembrance (Yom Hashoah) Day an official day on their provincial calendars. Officials from municipal, provincial and federal governments attended the ceremony as did survivors and their families, and members of the general public.
