Remembrance Events in Lithuania

18.11.2013

On 6 November, 200 students from five Lithuanian gymnasiums met with the players of the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team and paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust at the Paneriai memorial.

The Secretariat of the International Commission invited students and teachers from Alytus Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium, Ariogala Gymnasium, Seta Gymnasium of Kedainiai Region, Varena "Azuolas" Gymnasium and Vilnius Uzupis Gymnasium to come to Paneriai memorial and particpate in a ceremony honoring Holocaust victims. The event was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto and the International Day of Tolerance, which many countries mark on 16 November.

The Vilnius Tolerance Center hosted the meeting with the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball players and basketball federation representatives. The students had a unique opportunity to communicate with the basketball representatives and ask them about their careers, impressions of Lithuania, and cross-cultural communication and cooperation.  The concept of tolerance was continuously raised, and sport was defined as a bridge connecting people of different nationalities, beliefs, and attitudes.

The event was organized by the Chair of Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Knesset of Israel Emmanuel Zingeris, the Secretariat of the International Commission and the Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum.  More information and photos are available here.

On 19 November, the Secretariat of the International Commission is organizing a musical performance entitled “A few stories of a boy called Motel.” This performance was built by active Tolerance Educational Centers in Vilnius Sauletekis Secondary School. More than 70 students will participate in this musical performance.
