The Museum “Jews in Latvia” was created in 1989 by a group of Holocaust survivors under the leadership of historian Margers Vestermanis. Its permanent exhibition in the Riga Jewish Community House shows Latvian Jewish history and culture since the 16th century. A special section is focused on the Holocaust in Latvia. Museum employees have been engaged in locating and marking killing sites, notably in the framework of the Baltic Mass Graves Project and in cooperation with the Latvian Council of Jewish Communities. Meyer Meler’s comprehensive “Jewish Latvia: Sites to remember” (2013) was published by the Museum. All over the country, there are more than 200 killing sites, where 70,000 Latvian Jews as well as Jews deported from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary were murdered.
