A Stamp for Nicholas Winton

21.08.2015

The Holocaust Educational Trust and the Jewish News have launched a campaign for the Royal Mail to produce a stamp in recognition of Sir Nicholas Winton who saved 669 children during the Holocaust.

HET Chief executive Karen Pollock said: “Anyone who has heard of Sir Nicholas Winton has learnt something about standing up against injustice. This would be a fitting tribute to ensure that his legacy will continue – we are delighted to be working with the Jewish News on this initiative.”

The Association of Jewish Refugees CEO Michael Newman said such a tribute would help bring “his remarkable heroism further into the public consciousness”. Both Karen Pollock and Michael Newman are part of the UK delegation to IHRA.

In 1938, Nicholas Winton was a young stockbroker in London when he travelled to Prague and set up a makeshift headquarters in a hotel in Prague.  He began taking the names of families who wished to send their children to safety. Using his contacts in Britian, he secured foster families for 669 children.

Sir Nicholas’ son, said of his father's legacy: “It is about encouraging people to make a difference and not waiting for something to be done or waiting for someone else to do it.”

In 1988 Nicholas Winton appeared in an episode of That's Life!, unaware that the audience was made up of people he had saved. You can watch the clip here.

Winton passed away on 1st July 2015, at the age of 106.
