Memorial Event Held in Poprad, Slovakia

Under the auspices of Prime Minister Robert Fico, Poprad, Slovakia hosted a memorial event on 24 March for the victims of the first transport from Slovakia to Auschwitz.

A wreath-laying ceremony attended by representatives of the Jewish community, members of the Poprad government, and the general public was held at the Holocaust Memorial at the Poprad train station. 

“To commemorate the occasion means not to see history repeat itself,” said Pavol Mešťan, director of the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava. 

The memorial event was supported by the Slovak National Museum, the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava, the City of Poprad, and the Tatra Gallery in Poprad. 

The anniversary was also marked by the opening of a photography exhibition entitled “Back to the Roots” by Katarína Rachel Krajčovičová.
