Bucharest 41

21.11.2016

Bucharest 41 is an interactive project that uses new digital technologies and the support of 11 young actors from the National Theatre and the Jewish Theatre in Romania to show to the public in the Romanian capital  how the Pogrom in Bucharest in January 1941 occurred.

The purpose of the project is to depict the Bucharest interwar atmosphere, the role played by the Jewish community in the Romanian capital, but also the ascension of antisemitism and the consequences of the Holocaust in Romania in general and the Bucharest Pogrom in particular. The research for this modern contemporary theatre play was conducted by Mr. Adrian Cioflâncă and Mrs. Anca Tudorancea from the Centre for the Study of the Jewish History in Romania. Adrian Cioflâncă is a member of the Romanian Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

The event took place on 7 and 8 of November 2016 in Bucharest, in four different locations and during a tour bus, for four hours and was promoted mainly via social

media. Due to high demand, the project continued in the next weeks.  A special Facebook page was created in Romanian which can be accessed here.

Bucharest 41 is part of a larger cultural project developed by the Jewish Theatre in Romania. The project was supported by the Federation of the Jewish Communities in Romania, the Centre for the Study of the Jewish History in Romania, the National University of Theatre and Film, several NGOs from Bucharest.
