The Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (UJE) is a private multinational initiative established in 2008 to advance mutual comprehension and respect between Ukrainians and Jews on the basis of a truthful understanding of the past and joint action to address present-day challenges. In the belief that respectful treatment of mass graves in Ukraine – a moral imperative in itself – would contribute to achieving this goal, UJE seeks to foster a receptive political and societal climate in Ukraine for the identification, protection, and proper memorialization of mass graves by: engaging with political, religious, and society leaders; identifying challenges encountered over the past two decades; and promoting coordinated action among principal organizations active in the field.
