Type

Members and others include about 650 persons in more than 20 countries (400 in the USA) who are scholars with some special interest in the life and theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), a German pastor-theologian who opposed the Hitler government's policies from early 1933 on and was finally executed for, among other charges, his part in "Operation 7", a rescue of Jews and persons of Jewish ancestry to Switzerland using the German Military Intelligence organization. Bonhoeffer sent word through Paul Lehmann to Rabbi Stephen Wise in New York already in April of 1933 warning him that state persecution of Jews had begun and requesting that Wise organize to facilitate accommodating refugees from Germany. Annual meetings, special conferences, a quadrennial international meeting, and a newsletter published three times a year are part of the Society's program
